You eat nothing for a day or more and you only drink water. This is also called water fasting.
Fasting aims to improve all your bodily functions. By resting the digestive system, the body is able to resolve underlying issues, such as eliminating toxins, attacking and clearing viruses and germs, and restoring weaker bodily functions.

A concise description of the biochemistry of fasting

In a typical diet, carbohydrates are the main source of energy. The body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose. Some of this glucose is used for energy production, and some can be stored in the liver as glycogen.
Through the first two days of fasting, the liver will use its stored glycogen for energy. To ensure sufficient energy, the body switches to fat burning; this occurs after 2 days of fasting in women and after 3 days in men. Burning fatty acids produces ketones. This is called ketogenesis This is a normal physiological process that you can also induce by exercising on an empty stomach, by fasting, or by eating a ketogenic diet.
It is this ketogenic phase that matters. It causes the body to detoxify more deeply, repair mechanisms kick in, cancer cells are denied their necessary glucose, etc.

Benefits of fasting on immunity

Improvement of important immune functions; the improvement and production of immunoglobulins (immunoglobulins are also called antibodies). The better the quality of immunoglobulins, the stronger our immune system, and the more adequately our immunity can respond to the invasion of antigens (foreign substances) (*2).

Enhancement of antibacterial activity

Increase in white blood cells. Other names: lymphocytes or NKT cells (Natural Killer Cells). These large lymphocytes are part of the immune system; they kill foreign and pathogenic cells.

Often, a huge improvement in condition occurs after fasting.

A strong anti-inflammatory effect and stabilizes immunity. In rheumatic arthritis, pain significantly decreases after 7 to 10 days of fasting. Several studies have shown that fasting and dairy-free and vegetarian diets have a great effect on improving and even healing rheumatoid arthritis.

A strong cancer-inhibiting effect. The strongest evidence of this was seen in glioblastoma, a specific type of brain tumor. It is also very effective for prostate, lung, colon, and pancreatic cancer (*3). The mechanism relies on the fact that due to the decreasing glucose level, cancer cells no longer receive energy, while healthy body cells can use ketones as an energy source.

Benefits for cardiovascular diseases and weaknesses

Reduction of arteriosclerosis (blood vessel narrowing)

Lowering high blood pressure

Clearing fatty substances (plaque) from the inside of blood vessels. As we age, small damages to the blood vessel wall are continuously repaired with a type of fatty substance. Once it accumulates, this plaque grows and can cause blood vessel narrowing. Fasting allows the body to clear these plaques. (*4)

Significant improvement in heart function

Benefits for glucose metabolism or carbohydrate metabolism

Fasting has a strong normalizing effect on glucose and insulin levels. It has proven to be an important tool in improving diabetes, hypoglycemia, and pre-diabetes (*5).

Prepare well
Fasting is not for everyone. Always discuss it with your therapist or doctor.

Sources

Medical record, April 27, 2024, article "Why Ketogenic?" by Toine de Graaf

In the book by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. Fasting and Eating for Health, ISBN 0-312-18719-X, 1995, the biochemical background of this is explained.

See Eating for Health, Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

The End of Diabetes, Joel Fuhrman, M.D., ISBN 978-0-06-221998-5, 2013

Back to all blog articles

To promote your health, overcome chronic ailments, and give your immunity a huge boost, we recommend fasting for one or more days.
